Description
“Winnowing Hands," by California sculptor Shirley McWorter-Moss, is a sculpture in a fountain at Sweetgrass Plaza (The Market at Oakland) in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Originating in West Africa, the tradition of Sweetgrass Basket weaving has been part of the Lowcountry Gullah Geechee culture for over 300 years. Winnowing is an agricultural method developed by ancient cultures for separating grain from chaff brought to the Lowcountry rice plantations from West Africa.
