Description
When the 17-year cicadas emerged from the ground in my area, thousands of nymphs climbed the nearest available trees, and began to shed their nymph exoskeletons. Free of their old skin, their wings inflated with fluid and their new skin hardened. Once their new wings and bodies are ready, they begin their brief adult life. They seemed to be everywhere and their mating calls sounded like UFOs landing. Once they mate, females lay eggs in a groove in a branch and die, as do the males.
